Meditations in Italy - Cyanotypes

A series of handmade cyanotype prints of images from Italy. Reflections of stone forms from architecture and nature, with patterns that often reflect one another, both standing in a contradictory position of seeming immortal or ideal and yet being subject to the eroding forces of time and the elements. The nature of the making of these prints also embodies this same theme of interaction between a dynamic process and a timeless one- the capturing of the photograph is an isolated moment, but then its transfer onto the paper through a natural iron-based chemistry combining with sunlight is a gradual transformation enabled by nature and time.

These prints are each unique since the way the chemistry is painted on, the mixture of chemicals, intensity of sunlight, temperature of rinsing water, and numerous other factors will never be exactly the same with each print. There is a limited run of 50, and all prints will be signed and numbered. The final cyanotypes are available in two sizes: either 18” x 18” at $120 each, or 9” x 9” at $80 each. This series was recently exhibited at ZZA’s Wine Bar and Gallery in Oakland, CA from November 14 thru December 18 of 2008. It marks the first series in what will be a collection of works revisiting alternative photography techniques.
